"Like one stone
on a beach of stones
linked through you to all the rest"

         -Lucy Dougall

In pocket or lunch pail, or later
In an extra thermos,
for years he smuggled
through the guarded gate--
tailing mounds tiered
as eroding temples, Anaconda,
Anamex, the sign changing
but the job, the sub-broiled
open pit the same.

Except Sundays and strikes
most days he drove a spiraling road
to the crater's center.

What he brought back: rocks,
a fire-able offense,
salvaged from the blasts,
the smelter where tons
rendered a pound or so of pennies.

Drusey swirls of malachite,
clusters of quartz, milky
calcite, fools gold, azurite,
ragged sheets of native copper,

Fractured chunks turning to gravel
in my tumbler or when I try
to saw and grind them--
prodigal lapidary, youngest son
between his hand up
and his raging slap and fists.

I still keep a crate
of specimens intact,
my father's beauty and brittleness.
