Ian Dutton has extensive experience as a nonprofit leader, educator and researcher. Prior to joining the Foundation in November 2011, he served for three years as CEO of the Alaska SeaLife Center, Alaska's largest nonprofit marine research and education organization. He was formerly the deputy regional managing director for the Asia-Pacific region of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), managing programs undertaken by more than 400 staff throughout the United States and in nine countries from Mongolia to Papua New Guinea. He joined TNC from the University of Rhode Island where he coordinated their Asia partnerships with the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Ian chaired the North Pacific Research Board from 2009-2012 and is an adjunct Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in geographical sciences and planning from the University of Queensland. He was awarded the Coastal America National Leadership Award in 2010.
